The Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Vision Zero Action Plan
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Vision Zero is an approach based on the belief that traffic deaths and injuries are preventable.  These aren’t “accidents,” but instead the result of poor behaviors coupled with unforgiving roadway design. The resulting philosophy is to approach the problem from multiple angles, which include targeted education, data-driven enforcement, improved street designs, predictability, and limiting the potential for human error.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Policy Committee has taken the lead locally to develop a Vision Zero Action Plan centered on four Action Tracks:
  • Consistent and Fair:  community-oriented law enforcement
  • Paint Saves Lives:  low-cost engineering strategies
  • One Message, Many Voices:  public education strategies
  • The Future Will Not Be Like the Past:  focusing on design standards
Four workshops were held to develop the Action Plan, each workshop demonstrated a goal of one of the action tracks.  At the final workshops, the draft Action Plan was unveiled and includes low-cost, easy-to-implement strategies for all-inclusive community involvement.

The action plan can be reviewed at http://www.planhillsborough.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/VisionZero_ActionPlan_FinalDraft.pdf.
