Approve the Inter-Agency Agreement with the Public Defender's Office for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Regarding the Provision of a Student Advocate to Students During On-Campus Law Enforcement Interviews of Students | |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
The local Public Defender is willing to commit resources in the community including in the school district to assist students who are or are about to be questioned or interrogated by law enforcement and to serve as a Student Advocate in these circumstances. The District and the Public Defender have developed a pilot program whereby the Public Defender will make staff attorneys available as Student Advocates in one high school located in each of the eight areas when a law enforcement officer wishes to question a student on campus. The schools selected for the pilot program are: Leto High School, Hillsborough High School, Wharton High School, Plant City High School, Lennard High School, Armwood High School, and Plant High School. Additionally, the Public Defender will work with the district to train school administrators and teachers regarding students' rights and how to advise a child or such when appropriate. |
