Recognition of 2018 LEAD Student Contest Winners (Outreach and School Improvement)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In November, Superintendent Jeff Eakins announced the LEAD (Learn, Empower, Advocate, Dream) student contest to celebrate Black History Month. The contest challenged students in grades 3 through adult to use the arts to express how they have been inspired by a local African American leader.

Students submitted their work in one of three categories: literature, performing arts, or visual arts. Each entry was judged primarily on originality, creativity, and how well the student used his or her artistic vision to portray the theme. This year, more than 340 students completed an online Entry Form including the Artist Statement.

Eleven LEAD winners were selected, one per category if submitted from each division: intermediate (grades 3 through 5), middle school (grades 6 through 8), high school (grades 9 through 12), and Adult Education.  As a culminating experience for the student winners, inspirational honoree, parents, and school leadership, the winners were announced at the annual National Association for the Advanced of Colored People (NAACP) Freedom Fund Dinner. With tremendous support from our sponsors, each student winner received many prizes for the LEAD contest including a $500 monetary scholarship, personal Scholastic Library, and sports memorabilia including professional game tickets.
