Recognition of Newly Certified and Renewed National Board Certified Teachers (Educational Leadership and Professional Development Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
National Board Certification is the most prestigious credential an educator can earn. Like board-certified doctors, educators who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, self-assessment, peer review, and expert evaluation. It is the goal of the National Board certification process to further accomplished teaching practice, grow the accomplished teaching ranks, and ensure all students have access to the highest quality standards-based instruction. Since 1989, the district has been committed to providing encouragement and support to candidates. This effort has evolved into the ASPIRE! program, a formalized year-long system of support engaging current board-certified educators in facilitating job-embedded professional learning for candidates pursuing certification.

Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically is completed in one to three years. As part of the process, candidates build a portfolio that includes student work samples, classroom video, artifacts, and a thorough written analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, candidates are assessed on content knowledge aligned to the content they present to students and the certification they are seeking. National Board Certified Teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced levels of content knowledge, instructional skills, and educational practices.

The knowledge and expertise of current board-certified teachers are shared with other educators, new to the profession teachers, and certification candidates through the district’s NBCT Support Provider / Mentoring initiative, thus improving overall teaching and learning throughout the district. Over 900 Hillsborough educators have earned National Board Certification. For the 2017-2018 school year, Hillsborough County Public Schools has 373 active National Board Certified Teachers in classrooms, working at school sites, and in leadership positions. This year, 13 National Board Certified Teachers successfully completed the renewal process. Additionally, one teacher has been recognized as a newly achieved National Board Certified Teacher through the recently revised National Board Certification process.
