Recognition of Students with Perfect Attendance from Kindergarten Through the Twelfth Grade With the Support of Suncoast Credit Union and Toyota of Tampa Bay (Outreach & School Improvement)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Research has shown that school attendance, one of the key performance indicators, is the foundation of student achievement. Seventeen years ago, in an effort to encourage school attendance, Deputy Superintendent Beth Shields initiated an annual attendance program to recognize students who have maintained perfect attendance from kindergarten through the 12th grade. This year two local businesses, Toyota of Tampa Bay and Suncoast Credit Union, joined Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) to recognize four five seniors who have achieved 13 years of perfect attendance. Those students are:
  • Sarah Grabau, Newsome High School
  • Kristal Hill, Robinson High School
  • Dakota Johnson, Chamberlin High School
  • Joshua Quiggle, Newsome High School
  • Carissa Stopowenko, Lennard High School
HCPS would also like to extend our gratitude and recognize our community partners, Toyota of Tampa Bay and Suncoast Credit Union for their support of our students with exemplary attendance. Each of the four students will receive a computer and additional prizes from Suncoast Credit Union.

Additionally, Toyota of Tampa Bay will host a special event called A Perfect Car for Perfect Attendance to honor seniors with at least one year of perfect attendance. During the event, Toyota of Tampa Bay will be giving away a free car to one lucky senior. Each of the 1,769 eligible seniors will be provided one entry ticket for having earned at least one year of perfect attendance during high school. The seniors who have earned perfect attendance for 13 years will receive one entry ticket for each year of perfect attendance for their well deserved accomplishment. The calculation for senior year attendance will only include the first three grading periods.

At the May 15 Board meeting, each of the 1,769 eligible seniors who have earned at least one year of perfect attendance in high school will be entered into a random drawing. The random drawing will select 10 eligible seniors for a final drawing on June 5.

On June 5 at 2:00 p.m., the winner of the free car will be selected.

The aforementioned students graduating this year with perfect attendance for all 13 years of schooling will automatically enter the final drawing on June 5 with two entry tickets. The calculation for senior year attendance will only include the first three grading periods for the 2017-2018 school year.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Improve the high school graduation rate
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  No)
Donations from our partners directly to the perfect attendance K-12 students are provided at approximately $1,000 per student value; Suncoast Credit Union presents a $500 scholarship and Toyota of Tampa Bay presents each student with a laptop. Approximately another $35,000 $28,000 is provided in-kind by Toyota of Tampa Bay for the car donation and production of the event.
EVALUATION
At the end of each school year, the district conducts a search of the student database to determine seniors who qualify for the Perfect Attendance K-12 Award.
