Approve the Reorganization of the Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired (Educational Access, Opportunity, and Alternatives Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired (FIMC-VI) is a statewide discretionary project of the Florida Department of Education (FDOE); therefore, all salaries are paid for solely by grant funds. Since 1972, FIMC-VI has been housed with the School District of Hillsborough County. The role of FIMC-VI is to provide accessible instructional materials/textbooks in specialized formats of braille, large print, and digital to students with visual impairments and/or print disabilities in Florida’s public and private schools. Additionally, FIMC-VI provides professional development and technical assistance to teachers, agency personnel, and families; a loan library; and support for FDOE Office of Assessment. The attached documents detail a proposed reorganization of the FIMC-VI.  Since all salaries are solely grant-funded, the FDOE, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services has reviewed the reorganization plan and has approved the changes. This new structure will allow FIMC-VI to be responsive in meeting the ever-changing needs of Florida’s students with visual impairments and print disabilities.  The current staffing and organizational structure is impeding FIMC-VI’s ability to expand services and provide up-to-date accessible instructional materials to students with disabilities.
