Approve Naming of Music Room at Cannella Elementary School
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Cannella Elementary School faculty, staff, parents, and community have requested that the music room at Cannella Elementary be named the Juan Carlos Rios Music Room.  In addition, a petition with 121 signatures was submitted to the area office in favor of this request.  The Juan Carlos Rios Music Room will celebrate and honor Mr. Rios' 18 years of service to the students of Hillsborough County Public Schools and his service as Cannella Elementary School's Music Teacher for 12 years.  Mr. Rios served on the Hillsborough County Elementary Music Educators Council and formed a band with other educators in Hillsborough County.  Mr. Rios coordinated school-wide music projects such as Orff Ensemble, Concerts, Rock Band, Drumming Ensemble, Cannella Rock Band, and Chorus.  The forementioned projects increased students musical ability and encouraged their love of music.  His performing groups have participated in many districtwide and community events including Music Mayhem Riverfest, Music Education Spirit Week, and Young Writers Symposium. Honored by his peers, Mr. Rios was named Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year four times.  Mr. Rios was professional, friendly, and a beloved Cannella faculty member. Naming the music room at Cannella Elementary in Mr. Rios' honor would be a deserving tribute to recognize his many contributions and dedicated service to the school.

Cannella Elementary School has budgeted in their Facilities Internal account to purchase the lettering.
EVALUATION
This is in accordance with Policy 7250 - Commemoration of School Facilities which governs that school sites and facilities shall be named for individuals who have rendered outstanding public service to public education, for geographical locations, and for groups and clubs as indicated.  Elementary, middle, and secondary schools - for presidents, school board members, educators, outstanding citizens, and geographical locations.  An elected official proposed for a school name shall have left public office for a period not less than five years.  No candidate for public office shall be considered.  No school site or facility shall be named for a living person.
