Recognition of the American Heart Association’s Long Standing Commitment to Heart Health and Wellness Initiatives Throughout the District (Chief of Schools)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The American Heart Association (AHA) has worked with school leadership on various heart initiatives that benefit students, parents, and the community. Students directly engage in supporting heart health and wellness through service learning projects that impact the health for our community.   As a result of this partnership, the Superintendent and the School Board have been recognized nationally for this commitment.

During the 2017/2018 school year, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) has exceeded expectations and benefited in the following ways:
  • Superintendent Eakins was named the American Heart Association Administrator of the Year
  • 150,00+ students and families received Heart Healthy messages that include lifesaving information on heart attack and stroke warning signs and symptoms
  • HCPS raised over $385,000 for the fight against heart attack and stroke; this represents an 18 percent increase or $58,000 over last year’s fundraising efforts
  • 122 elementary and middle schools successfully participated in the Jump/Hopes service learning program receiving over $30,000 in free physical education (PE) equipment and over 8,000 balls/jump ropes
  • 5,050 elementary students have taken the Heart Healthy Challenge: exercise for 60 minutes a day and choose heart healthy foods and drinks. Research indicates that eating behaviors are established by third grade
  • HCPS is the #2 organization/company in fundraising efforts supporting the AHA mission in the Tampa Bay area (including contiguous counties). HCPS is #9 nationally for district fundraising efforts
  • Since the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) graduation requirement began last school year (2017/2018), over 26,000 high school students have been trained in the life saving skill of CPR; 35 CPR kits have been donated to district high schools and middle schools
  • The AHA provides resources that are aligned with K-12 Physical Education Florida State Standards
  • This program is fully aligned with the Building Strong School Culture model supported by the district. Participating in the AHA’s Service Learning Programs touch on four of the eight pillars outlined in our strategic plan.  All dollars raised help with the discovery of new treatments through research, legislative advocacy for our communities, student physical education, nutrition/wellness programs and CPR training courses for middle and high school students
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child • Develop, recognize, and reward employees • Engage and communicate with families and stakeholders • Establish a strong foundation of financial stewardship • Demonstrate "best practices" in all aspects of safety: student, employee, visitor, facility, transportation, and health
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  No)
$30,000 donated in PE equipment
$17,500 in CPR training equipment has been donated by the AHA to the school district for student/staff trainings
