SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Adoption of Proclamation—Native American Heritage Month, November 2016 (Student Services Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The efforts to gain recognition for the significant contributions of our first Americans can be traced back more than 100 years.  These efforts were further solidified in 1990 when President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Heritage Month."  Similar proclamations, under variations of the name including "Native American Heritage Month" and "National American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month," have been issued since 1994.

During the month of November, the School Board encourages school-based administration and staff to thoughtfully plan culturally-sensitive, schoolwide activities and lessons for students that further explore the history and cultures of Native American and Alaskan Native people and to celebrate the considerable role the first Americans played in the establishment and growth of our nation.  The Board acknowledges the importance of honoring these contributions, achievements, and the cultural and historical legacy of the Native American and Alaskan Native people.
