EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), dental caries (tooth decay) is the single most common chronic childhood disease, five times more common that asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.  Our community partners work together to provide dental education, screenings, referrals, fluoride and/or sealants to all second grade students attending a Title 1 elementary school.  Third grade students receive follow-up dental care.

The DOH-Hillsborough, TFHC, SCHC and MORE HEALTH, Inc., entered into an agreement with the School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, in September of 2012 to provide dental services and/or apply dental sealants to second and third grade students in eight Title 1 Schools.  In 2013, the number of schools participating in the program doubled to sixteen.  Forty-eight Title 1 elementary schools participated in the program in 2014 and all Title 1 elementary schools were served in 2015/2016.  Again this school year, 2016/2017, all Title 1 schools will participate in the school based dental sealant program.

The DOH-Hillsborough is the lead agency and the coordinator of the dental sealant program.  Agency employees work with the school nurse and an identified "Oral Health Champion" at each school to select dates for administering dental sealants to those students who return a signed parental permission form as well as providing sealant information to students.

MORE HEALTH, Inc. schedules and teaches their dental lesson, "Tooth Town, Show Down," to second grade students in Title 1 schools.  The lesson promotes the prevention of tooth decay and the benefits of healthy nutrition.  Following the presentation, parents are provided dental health information letters along with a free toothbrush for each student that participated in the education program.

TFHC and SCHC, in partnership with the DOH-Hillsborough, provide a short, district approved, sealant presentation in order to prepare the students.  Agency employees then provide the dental screenings and apply the dental sealants to those students who have returned a signed parent permission form.  Students needing additional care are referred to the aforementioned centers for restorative services at no cost to the families.
