SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Affiliation Agreements for Health Science Education for the 2016/2017 School Year (Workforce Connections)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We request approval of the following affiliation agreements to provide clinical training for health science education programs:

  • Galen Care, d/b/a Brandon Regional Hospital
  • Healthlink Diagnostic Laboratory

The Florida Department of Education curriculum frameworks require onsite clinical training for health science education enrollees. At this time, we have 112 clinical facilities that provide hands-on clinical experiences for secondary and postsecondary students based on affiliation agreements. The length of programs in which students are enrolled range from 3 weeks to 14 months. These standard agreements are necessary to fulfill our obligation to students for clinical experiences. The partnerships we establish with the clinical facilities in this community are essential to our health science education programs and beneficial to the health care industry. We are pleased that the quality of our graduates provides an incentive to the health care industry to continue our long-term mutually beneficial relationship.

Galen Care d/b/a Brandon Regional Hospital requires The School Board of Hillsborough County, Florida to be the first signature of the agreement.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Improve the high school graduation rate • Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)
Clinical facilities are provided by various health care agencies at no cost to the district.
EVALUATION
Clinical facilities will be evaluated by students and instructors after each clinical rotation utilizing a clinical environment instrument.  In 2015/2016, we had 1,482 health science students from our technical colleges and high school conduct clinical at district affiliates.  Our students and staff reported that their clinical experience augmented the curriculum and provided students with real-world experience in a hospital, pharmacy, or long-term care setting.
