EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
National Board Certification is the most prestigious credential an educator can earn. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, educators who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review. Since 1989, the district has been instrumental in providing support and encouragement to candidates. Today, this program has evolved into the ASPIRE! Program, a formalized year-long system of support engaging current Board Certified educators in providing job-embedded professional development as candidates pursue certification. It is the goal of the National Board Certification process to increase the number of accomplished educators and ensure all students have access to the highest quality standards-based instruction. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. As part of the process, candidates build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, video, and thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, candidates are assessed on their knowledge of the content they present to students. National Board Certified Teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced levels of teaching knowledge, skills, and practices. The knowledge and expertise of current Board Certified educators are shared with new candidates, educators new to the profession, and other educators through the district’s National Board mentoring process, thus improving overall teaching and learning in the district. For the 2016-2017 school year, Hillsborough County Public Schools has 465 active National Board Certified Teachers in classrooms, working at school sites, and in leadership positions throughout the district. This year, 14 National Board Certified Teachers successfully completed the renewal process. |
