Approve Naming of Auditorium at Middleton High School
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Middleton High School faculty, staff, and community members have requested that the auditorium at Middleton High School be named in honor of Henry C. Washington, Sr.  Mr. Washington began his relationship with Middleton High School as a student and athlete.  He was quarterback and co-captain of the football team, captain of the basketball team, and also played baseball and ran track.  After graduating from Middleton in 1968, Mr. Washington went on to college and joined the United States Army. In 1976 he returned to Tampa and began a teaching career in Hillsborough County Public Schools.  Besides teaching, he also served as the head coach of the girls basketball team at King High School.  Mr. Washington continued to move up the ladder and was appointed assistant principal and principal of several schools throughout the county.  In January 2002, Mr. Washington was appointed principal of the new Middleton High School.  In 2005, he was appointed area director for Area IV schools and remained in the district office for 12 years.  Mr. Washington retired after 42 years of distinguished service to Hillsborough County Public Schools as the Area Superintendent, Area IV.   It would be an honor to the faculty, staff, and community members of Middleton High School to have the auditorium named after Mr. Washington.

Funds in the amount of $800.00 will be available in the millage fund account 378.  For tracking purposes, the project number to this agenda item is 8019.
EVALUATION
Policy 7250 – COMMEMORATION OF SCHOOL FACILITIES - School sites and facilities shall be named for individuals who have rendered outstanding public service to public education, for geographical locations and for groups and clubs as indicated: A.  Elementary, middle, and secondary schools - for Presidents, school board members, educators, outstanding citizens and geographical locations; B.  Other facilities, such as libraries, playgrounds and stadiums - for educators, outstanding citizens or for groups or clubs which assisted most in the establishment of the facility. When naming a new school or other existing facility, input shall be solicited from neighboring schools and/or the community at large. A new school or facility shall be named after the construction contract has been awarded. Petitions were submitted from faculty, staff, and community members with a total of 791 signatures (see attached example)
