EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | |
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), dental caries (tooth decay) is the single most common chronic childhood disease, five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. Our community partners work together to offer dental education, screenings, referrals, fluoride and/or sealants to all second grade students attending a Title I elementary school. Third grade students can receive follow-up dental care. SCHC will be expanding services to include kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth grade students in select pilot schools that currently receiving their services. MHI schedules and teaches their dental lesson, "Tooth Town, Show Down," to all second grade students in Title I schools. The lesson promotes the prevention of tooth decay and the benefits of healthy nutrition. |

EVALUATION | |
Monthly and annual reports will be submitted to the DOH-Hillsborough with information regarding dental screenings and follow-up. By providing dental services, barriers impacting student learning and time out of the classroom are reduced. Since the inception of this program in 2012, over 21,700 students have been served. In the 2016/2017 school year, 4,508 students were screened and 3,444 students received dental sealants. | |
