SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve the Purchase of Adopted Instructional Materials for Elementary and High School Science for Gap Year 2017/2018 (Office of Teaching and Learning)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2011, the Board approved the six-year adoption of various science instructional materials/textbooks published by National Geographic, McGraw-Hill Education, and Pearson Education.  These materials were purchased in both print and digital format for various elementary and high school science courses.  In 2015, the state revised the adoption schedule, adding an additional year to the science adoption.  This created a gap year in funding for science for the 2017/2018 school year.  The current adoption schedule is included in the attachment.

The printed materials already purchased by the district are in good condition and will be used for instruction during the gap year.  The digital access originally purchased expires June 2017 and will not be accessible during the gap year.  The proposed purchase will extend the digital access for this one year as indicated on the cost proposal from each publisher, also included in the attachment.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
• Improve the high school graduation rate • Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted:  Yes)

This cost is estimated based on projected enrollment and may fluctuate slightly based on actual need.
EVALUATION
Since the adoption in 2011, these instructional materials have successfully helped teachers and students meet course standards.  The district will continue to implement these materials for one additional year, to include training and support for teachers as needed.
