SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Renewal Contract for Services with C. E. Mendez Foundation for Drug Education Teacher Services to 6th Grade Students Through the Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant, 2005-2006 - $229,320 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

C. E. Mendez Foundation, Inc. has provided to the District the Foundation’s drug, alcohol, and tobacco awareness and prevention program of “Too Good for Drugs” since 1980. Each year, approximately 13,000 sixth-grade students receive 9 hours of drug education in this highly successful comprehensive program that includes reading materials for students. The health educators also work with K–5 schools that request service. In October, federal funds are provided through the Safe and Drug Free Schools program for the fiscal period July 1 through June 30. The contract with C. E. Mendez Foundation, Inc. for 2005–2006 has been approved by the Foundation’s Executive Director and Director of Local Programs and is being submitted for full execution by our School Board.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 1 - The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $229,320 are included in the divisional special revenue/federal programs budget under the Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant (Project 0620.) There is no additional cost to the district.
