SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Technical Service Agreement for Lillia Stroud, to Provide Professional Development Training and Support for Teachers at Pierce Middle School (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

With so many new teachers on the Pierce faculty who are non-education majors, possessing the right attitude and expectations to have a successful classroom experience is critical. It is also imperative that teachers have a full understanding of the social issues that face the students they serve. Pierce has worked very hard on their Reading and Math components this year, offering weekly reading strategies that are practiced and collected. They are currently establishing the Gear Up program for the remainder of this school year and into the summer. All of the Reading and Math strategies will help; however, the extra boost of this training allows instructors to model appropriate behaviors and establish an atmosphere that fosters learning and a feeling of belonging. The main areas targeted in the professional development workshops will be Bullying and Gangs, Community Building, and Diversity. This training will enhance the safe, caring, and orderly environment for teachers and students which will positively impact the academic program at Pierce. Approximately 50 teachers will receive this training during the month of June.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5- The district will eliminate the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

This Technical Service Agreement will be paid out of Pierce Middle School’s Title I Staff Development set aside dollars. ($9,000)

EVALUATION

Besides the 6 hours of preplanning with team leaders and subject area leaders, 6 hours of follow-up activities are included. Journaling will be assigned using provided manuals as well as weekly reflections. One-on-one meetings with the trainer will be used to share this information and for the presenter to give feedback. Analysis of referrals prior to the training will be compared to the number of referrals after the training. Parent conference documentation will be maintained as well as up to date discipline logs. A final evaluation will be done at the conclusion of the 2006-2007 school year to determine if the training provided by Mrs. Stroud had a positive impact on student learning and school culture.
