TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION

Focus on Student Achievement: "Academic Athletic Team of the Year" Awards (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 1985, the Athletics Department initiated a districtwide awards program to recognize the academic achievement of athletic teams. The team award is based on the team average unweighted grade point average (GPA) and the comprehensive award is based on the average GPA of all teams at each school. The highest ranking team in each sport and the highest ranking school are awarded trophies to display at their school for one year. The trophy is passed on to the winning school each year.

The Academic Athletic Awards program celebrates the academic achievement of student-athletes and provides an incentive for team members to strive for excellence in the classroom as well as in sports. Attached is a summary of the GPA data for the Academic Athletic Award winners for this school year. The current corporate sponsor is Pepsi.

Helen Soash, Cheerleading Coach at Alonso High School, and student-athlete will speak about the impact that winning this award has had on their cheerleading team. In addition, the student-athlete from the school winning the Comprehensive Academic Athletic Award will speak on the impact of winning this award.
