SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Volunteer Nurse Program Contract Between the School District of Hillsborough County and the State of Florida Department of Health (Student Services & Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This contract renewal is in effect July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007. The purpose of the project is to recruit licensed volunteers to supplement school health personnel at screenings and school clinics. Many volunteer hours were directed to sites that have staff shortages, or have shared trained health services staff, such as Gorrie, McKitrick and Summerfield Elementary Schools. In addition, over 1,000 volunteer nursing hours assisted with vision and scoliosis screenings during the 2005-06 school year. All volunteers are given background screenings that are used for all school district employees. Volunteers also receive a brief orientation regarding the services they are to provide. The contract provides one nursing unit that coordinates background screenings, training and in-service materials for the volunteers.
