SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Contract with Renzulli Learning Systems, LLC for an Annual Subscription Site-License for Magnet Schools and Programs (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Renzulli Learning Systems resources, as part of the School-wide Enrichment Model (SEM), will be used at 26 magnet schools for academic success in each program. The SEM applies the know-how of gifted education to a systematic plan for total school improvement and to escalate the level and quality of learning experiences for any and all students. The model provides guidance for the development of challenging and appropriate educational opportunities for all students, regardless of differences in demographic and economic backgrounds or differences in the rates, styles, and levels at which they learn. The Renzulli Learning System, a breakthrough teaching tool to help teachers assess strengths and differentiate curriculum and instruction at all grade levels, will be an important aspect of the success of the programs.

Based on 30 years of research at the University of Connecticut, the system is a web-based tool comprised of four components that will assess students, match individual or class activities, and enable students and teachers to plan and complete learning projects based on interest. In addition, students, parents, and teachers will have access to student portfolios that are easily transferable from grade to grade and school to school.

The attached contract was negotiated at a substantial savings per school by the purchase for all magnet programs. The effective date of the contract is August 6, 2006. The contract stipulates that the price will not be increased for years two and three as long as a minimum of 10 site licenses are maintained.
