SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Accept a $200,000 Check from Hewlett Packard (HP) to the Hillsborough Education Foundation to Initiate a Technology Matching Program.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Previously, the foundation and the District sponsored a very successful technology match program to enable schools to purchase technology hardware, software, and/or connectivity. This program will again help schools with the need to replace and replenish these systems to support student learning. As noted in the "Refresh" plan for computers, schools need to find other sources of funds to replace the total inventory of computers. This matching program is a positive addition to help schools stretch the funds available to them for technology. The attached guidelines and application will be reviewed by a district committee prior to the start of school in August to ensure a simple, fair process is in place for the program. Hewlett Packard is providing the $200,000 donation as part of the technology partnership agreement. Included as part of the donation is $5,000 for student scholarships as identified by our NAACP local chapter partners.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Combining $100,000 from the HP donation and $150,000 from the District technology funds provides a beginning balance of $250,000 for the match. The 50 percent match from schools makes $500,000 available for 2006-2007. Funding levels for future years are anticipated to meet or exceed this level.

EVALUATION

The number of schools participating and the dollars distributed will be reported to the Board on an annual basis. Additionally, participating schools will complete a satisfaction survey on the process used to select and distribute the funds.
