SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Brochures and Pamphlets for Distribution: District Parent Family Involvement Rules, A Parent's Checklist, and A Parent's Guide to Hillsborough County Public Schools (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The 2003 Legislature enacted the Family and School Partnership for Student Achievement Act, section 1002.23, Florida Statutes, to provide parents with specific information about their child's educational progress, provide information about their choices and opportunities for involvement in their child's education, and provide a framework for building and strengthening partnership among parents, teachers, principals, district school superintendents, and other school personnel. The law requires each district school board to develop a parent guide for successful school achievement, a parent self-assessment checklist, and to adopt rules that strengthen family involvement and family empowerment. The Florida Department of Education requires that these documents be approved by the School Board and submitted prior to October 1, 2006.

In collaboration with the Tampa Tribune, A Parent's Guide to Hillsborough County Public Schools is published and mailed to school sites. Each student receives a copy of the guide to take home. In addition, the Tampa Tribune inserts a copy in the newspaper for distribution to all subscribers.
