SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Legally Required Establishment of School Board Member Salary

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

During the 2002 session, legislation was enacted (FS 1001.395) requiring School Boards to establish the salaries of School Board Members. The statute requires the salary to be adopted at the first regular Board meeting following the organizational meeting. The statute also requires the proposed salary to be noticed at the time that the aforementioned Board Meeting is noticed, and prohibits the salary from being increased from the noticed amount during the meeting at which the salary is adopted.

It is recommended that the Board establish an annual salary of $40,887 for School Board Members for the 12-month period starting December 17, 2006. This salary has been determined by applying the formula for compensation of elected county constitutional officers set forth in Chapter 145 F.S. This is the same formula that historically has been used for calculation of School Board Member salaries.
