SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve State Pre-Approved and District Proposed High School Majors, 2006/2007

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A major component of the 2006 A++ legislation (House Bill 7087) addresses the need for middle school students to participate in career development activities, create an educational planner, and select a high school major. Through these initiatives, students are more likely to see the relevance of their educational experiences to a future career.

The School Board must approve all majors offered at each high school and annually submit them to the Commissioner of Education for final approval. As required by the state, Hillsborough County's comprehensive list of State Pre-approved and District Proposed Majors (indentified with an *) for each of the high schools, career centers, ESE centers, alternative programs, and charter schools which service our high school students is attached for approval.

Beginning with this year's Grade 8, students will select a high school career focus and complete four elective credits within that area of concentration. The major is reviewed annually and may be changed as needed. In addition, this year's Grade 6 students will be required to engage in career exploration and planning during Grade 7. Students may complete a semester course in career education or complete a career component that is infused into a career and technical course. The career course or component will utilize the electronic Florida Academic Counseling and Tracking for Students (FACTS.org) which will result in an electronic Personal Education Plan (ePEP.) The ePEP must be signed by the parent, student, and counselor, and then reviewed annually.

In our district, the required career exploration course will be infused into the curriculum of the Career and Technical courses. The teachers will utilize the free Career Cruiser workbook and the CHOICES online planner that are available from the Florida Department of Education. An implementation plan has been developed that includes teacher/counselor training, career activities, ePEP timelines, counselor conferences, parent meetings, website communications, and PowerPoint presentations.
