SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Adopt the Proclamation Recognizing Teachers and Students Who Attended Harlem Academy.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Harlem Academy was the first black school in Hillsborough County Public Schools. Its rich history dates back to the late 1800s. The school was closed in 1965. The Historic Harlem Academy Committee recognizes that many of the students and teachers from Harlem Academy deserve to be honored. A banquet in their honor will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2006, at the University of South Florida. The recommendation is to adopt the proclamation to honor the district's first school for African American children and to celebrate the lasting legacy it has in our community.
