SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Agreement for Technical Services for Professional Development for Achievement, Inc., to Train Reading, Language Arts, and Health Science Teachers at Sligh Middle School (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A major focus of Sligh Middle School’s school improvement plan is improving reading achievement for students, thus, it is imperative to continue training the reading, language arts, and health science teachers to ensure student academic success. The provider will plan and conduct trainings for 25 reading/language arts/health science teachers in grades 6, 7, and 8. The provider will analyze student data with teachers, implement CRISS (Creating Independance through Student-owned Strategies) and technology, develop models for differentiating instruction; staff development on Sunshine State Standard strands during teacher’s planning periods and model in the classroom.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 1- The percentage of students scoring at level three or higher on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in Reading will increase a minimum of five percentage points. Goal 5 - The District will eliminate the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test achievement gap by a minimum of ten percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

This Technical Service Agreement will be paid out of Sligh Middle School’s Title 1 School Improvement Grant dollars. ($9,100)

EVALUATION

One-on-one meetings with the trainer will be used to share staff information and feedback. A final evaluation will be done at the conclusion of the 2006 -2007 school year when FCAT scores arrive to determine if the training provided by Professional Development for Achievement, Inc. had a positive impact on student achievement.
