SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Federal Summer Food Service Program for 2007 in selected Hillsborough County Schools (Business Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

For the past fifteen years, the Student Nutrition Department has operated the Summer Food Service Program in schools with at least 50% free and reduced meal eligibility during the regular school year. Schools that qualify provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch free of charge to children in the community under the age of 18. Benefits generated from this program include providing nutritious meals to needy children, offering summer employment to student nutrition personnel, and generating additional reimbursement revenue. Children attending the following extended programs will benefit from summer meals: Exceptional Student Education, School Age Child Care, Head Start, 21st Century, Reading Camp, Gear Up, and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 6 - All schools in the District will be assigned a state grade of A, B, or C. Studies show the positive impact that school meals have on test scores, behavior, and the incidence of tardiness and absenteeism.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Projected Net Profit to the Student Nutrition Program is $87,439.
