SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Agreements for Technical Services for the Developers and Trainers of the District’s Network Administration Training Course During the 2007-2008 School Year. (Information and Technology Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 1997, the Technology Training Services and Support Department of Hillsborough County Public Schools assembled a cadre of six (6) knowledgeable technology specialists from schools within the district. This cadre developed and trained school-site personnel who were responsible for managing a school Local Area Network and server. During the past 10 years, the cadre has trained approximately 650 network administrators and backup administrators. One of the benefits is that the training provides consistency in the implementation of LANs throughout the district.

The Network Administration team members are paid a fixed price of $3,500.00 plus fringe to revise the curriculum and develop training manuals according to the standards developed by Hillsborough County Public Schools and Microsoft Corporation. Following the course development, the team will train one group of new site network administrators prior to the opening of school, and five (5) sets of courses throughout the following school year. Each session provides training for 16 participants. Each course consists of five (5) modules: Introduction to Networking, Maintenance and Troubleshooting, Management and Troubleshooting, Server Management and Altiris.

Agreements for Technical Services have been prepared for the attached list of Network Administrator developers/instructors. These developers/instructors will meet on a regular basis with the implementation team from Customer Service and Support to ascertain that the course curriculum is presented in accordance with the goals of Customer Service and Support, the District Technology Plan, and changes made by Microsoft to the Server 2003 software.

Funds for paying instructor contracts are from Staff Development training funds, Project 4503, in the amount of $20,820.10.

EVALUATION

Area Field Techs from Customer Service and Support are surveyed on a regular basis to determine if the site network administrators are configuring the LANs correctly and typical problems are not occurring due to faulty implementations. This feedback is used to provide support to the schools and revise the course curriculum on an ongoing basis.
