DATE: Tuesday, June 5, 2007
TO: School Board Members
FROM: MaryEllen Elia, Superintendent

SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the School Board Resolution in Support of Improving and Reauthorizing the No Child Left Behind Act.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law by President George W. Bush in January 2002. Our Hillsborough County Public Schools have implemented NCLB for five years. In the 110th Congress, the United States House of Representatives will consider legislation that will reauthorize NCLB. The Board supports and encourages other local community and civic leaders to support improvements during the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.

In August 2006, the School Board of Hillsborough County passed a resolution to support actions in the United States House of Representatives to create legislation to modify the No Child Left Behind Act. The Board and district have since worked with members of Congress and community leaders to support the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act to develop support for modifications to the legislation to make it a more effective tool to help students.

On May 29, 2007, the School Board considered an item that included a resolution supporting the actions described above for the 110th Congress. After discussing the issues, the Board changed elements of the resolution to make it more relevant to a range of actions and improvements to the Act. This agenda item incorporates the ideas Board Members provided at the May 29, 2007, meeting.
