EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On July 27, 1999, the School Board approved the establishment of an Alternative To Out-of-School Suspension (ATOSS) program throughout the district. This is a collaborative effort with The Children’s Board, City and County Recreation Centers, faith-based programs, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa. Space is provided by agencies at no cost to the district for supervision and education delivery for suspended students, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. At least one site is provided within each of the General Area geographic areas.

ATOSS students participated in FCAT preparation and peer mediation activities designed specifically for them. During the 2004-2005 school year there were 7,166 (unduplicated count) students that attended the ATOSS program.

Agreements have been developed with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa, Inc. at Interbay; Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa, Inc. at Wilbert Davis; Nuccio Park Recreation Center; Jackson Springs Recreation Center; Apollo Beach Recreation Center; Providence Park Recreation Center; Mort Recreation Center; North Tampa Recreation Center; Martin Luther King, Jr. Tampa Recreation Center; Martin Luther King, Jr. Plant City Recreation Center; and Support, Inc., Tampa.
