SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Four Grant Applications to Florida Department of Education and if approved, accept funds for Career Academies, $200,000 each - Total $800,000 (Technical and Career Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The SUCCEED Florida - Career Paths competitive grant program was established by the 2005 Florida Legislature to provide grants to create and enhance career academies with support from businesses, industries, or postsecondary educational institutions. Each district may apply for four academies of $200,000 each for one-year grants for the purpose of planning, redesigning, or implementing a career academy. The four grant applications are: Durant High School Public Service Academy (planning); Jefferson High School International Business Academy (implementation); Middleton High School Academy of Aeronautics (planning); and Wharton High School Academy of Science, Engineering,and Health (implementation.) Grant funding will provide equipment, supplies, curriculum development, and teacher training for each career academy.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

If awarded, grant funds of $200,000 for each academy for a total of $800,000 will be included in the divisional special revenue/federal programs budget. Indirect costs are included in the grant application.
