Adoption of Proclamation - 2005 'Year of Foreign Language Study'

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On February 17, 2005, the United States Senate passed S. Res. 28, designating the year 2005 as the ‘Year of Foreign Language Study’. The attached Proclamation for Hillsborough District Schools has been prepared for adoption by the School Board.

The goal of The Year of Languages is to advance the concept that every American should develop proficiency not only in English, but in other languages as well. Foreign language study makes important contributions to a student's cognitive development, our national economy, and our national security. The district encourages and supports initiatives to promote and expand the study of foreign languages in our elementary, middle and high schools.
