Recognition of World Languages State Competition Winners (Secondary Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Students studying a world language recently competed in a statewide competition that included poetry recitation and skits. Spanish students competed against other districts throughout the state on April 15-17, 2010, in Orlando, Florida. Japanese students competed against the University of Florida, University of South Florida (USF), University of Central Florida, and Eckerd College on April 10, 2010, at the USF Campus in Tampa, Florida. One Chinese student competed at the State Chinese Competition on March 19, 2010, at the USF Chinese Institute in Tampa, Florida, and the National Chinese Competition against districts located throughout the United States on April 18, 2010, at the General Chinese Consulate in Houston, Texas.

The importance and advantages of learning a world language is continuing to increase day to day. Apart from being able to converse with different people in their own language, it also teaches tolerance, understanding, and cultural awareness. Learning a world language opens the door to other cultures and helps students become more competitive in the global market place.

Attached is a list of students who participated in these events.
