SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Review Impact of Full Implementation of the Class Size Amendment
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2002, the citizens of the State of Florida passed an amendment to the Florida Constitution that placed caps on the size of public school classes. Subsequently, the Florida Legislature passed a bill to implement the constitutional amendment. The implementing of the bill phased in the constitutional requirement in several stages leading to the 2010-2011 school year constitutional deadline. Effective the 2010-2011 school year, all public school districts must implement the class size caps on a class-by-class basis.
At a School Board workshop on December 11, 2007, the Board reached consensus to create the Class Caps Community Taskforce to explore serious logistical problems associated with this implementation and to make recommendations to the superintendent on how best to address these problems and issues.
