Go Advanced Placement II (GAP II) (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Initiative: GAP II provides rising tenth and eleventh graders with a one-week residential college experience at the University of South Florida focusing on Advanced Placement, team building, and leadership.

Goals:

  • To provide college, career and admission process awareness
  • To increase student academic achievement
  • To provide leadership skills and opportunities
  • To provide students with skills on how to prepare for Advanced Placement courses
  • Targeted Population: Two hundred forty rising tenth and eleventh grade Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students from all 27 Hillsborough County Public high schools.

    Timeline: GAP II has been implemented since school year 2002/2003. GAP II has served over 2,400 students in the past eight years and plans are in place to continue its implementation.

    Staff Development: The staff has completed service learning training, AVID, Advanced Placement, and guidance training conducted by the CollegeBoard, AVID Center and district trainers under the HCPS professional development system.

    Transferability: GAP II is a district initiative that is portable to other high school student populations.

    Involvement: The David C. Anchin Center acted as a liaison with the University of South Florida to arrange campus accommodations such as classrooms, lodging, and meals.

    * Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates, * Motivate students to become responsible learners, * Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum, * Align financial resources to support the district’s strategic goals, * Promote a culture of safety, which is free from harassment, bullying, and aggression, * Demonstrate "best practices" in all aspects of safety including students, employees, visitors, facilities, transportation, and health

    EVALUATION

    July 2010. Expansion of the program and revision of the courses offered in 2011 will be considered upon reviewing student/teacher evaluation data by the University of South Florida, Anchin Center.
