SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Potential Cost Estimate Associated with Class Size Reduction Amendment for 2010-2011 school year.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Beginning in August 2010, the Constitution of the State of Florida requires that all districts adhere to the class by class caps in core academic classes with student to teacher ratios as follows: 18 to 1 in grades PreK - 3, 22 to 1 in grades 4-8, and 25 to 1 in grades 9-12. In order to adhere to the requirements, the Class Caps Community Task Force (established by the Superintendent in February 2008) reviewed Class Size Reduction needs and requirements for the district. The task force made recommendations to the Superintendent on specific planning activities and strategies to address full implementation of class level requirements.

The estimated financial cost of implementing three (3) of the recommendations, associated with student assignment and transportation, is over one million dollars. This estimate does not include the cost for additional instructional staff. It is important to note that if the population grows and/or shifts, the cost potentially can increase.
