SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Limited Extension to the Contract for Trinity School for Children

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Charter legislation includes a provision for the renewal of a charter contract for those schools that have successfully completed their contract term. The school district's process for the contract renewal consideration includes the submission of a letter of intent to renew the contract, a comprehensive program review, and the development of a new contract. The School District and Trinity School for Children are currently negotiating a contract. Trinity School for Children has requested mediation services from the Department of Education, which they are entitled to by state statute. The requested extension will cover the time required for mediation.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

* Demonstrate consistent and effective teaching methods, * Motivate students to become responsible learners, * Challenge and support all students with an appropriate curriculum, * Recruit, develop, and retain a highly effective, diverse workforce, * Demonstrate best financial practices, * Promote a culture of safety, which is free from harassment, bullying, and aggression, * Demonstrate "best practices" in all aspects of safety including students, employees, visitors, facilities, transportation, and health, * Construct and maintain facilities that create an environment conducive to teaching and learning

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

The charter school's projected enrollment of 461 students will generate approximately $2,944,000 in FEFP funds. The school district retains five percent, up to 250 students, ($79,825) of FEFP funds to offset services provided by the district. The school also will receive approximately $197,000 in capital outlay funds during the 2010-2011 school year. Costs associated with the development of the contract include district staff time and attorney fees.
