Recognition of Area Attendance, School Attendance, and Presentation of the Beth Shields Awards 2009/2010 (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Ten years ago Deputy Superintendent Beth Shields initiated an attendance incentive program for schools that meet or exceed the annual district attendance goal of 96%. Schools who have met this goal are awarded with either a flag (first and fifth years) or a colored streamer for subsequent years. In 2006/2007 this incentive was expanded to recognize the area with the highest cumulative attendance average and the area with the most improved cumulative attendance average from the previous school year. The general director from the recognized area receives an attendance flag along with a streamer depicting the award.

This year 11 schools will be recognized for their outstanding achievement in maintaining high attendance percentages for the 2009/2010 school year. The Beth Shields Attendance Award recipients will be recognized and presented with a plaque for achieving the highest percentage of attendance at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

* Increase promotion rates at all grade levels and the percentage of high school graduates

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funding of $1,745 for the purchase of the flags, streamers, and plaques was provided from Student Services, Part 1 budget.

EVALUATION

At the end of each school year, the Supervisor of Attendance will conduct an evaluation by comparison of attendance percentages to the previous year. The report will be shared with the Board annually.
