Adoption of Proclamation Declaring September 17, 2010, as Constitution Day and September 20 – 26, 2010, as Celebrate Freedom Week (Curriculum and Instruction Division-Secondary Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Constitution Day celebrates the formation and signing of the United Sates Constitution on September 17, 1787. Knowledge of the Constitution and appreciation of its significance is an essential part of civics education.

Celebrate Freedom Week was created to educate students across America about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of this country and the values upon which this country was established. Celebrate Freedom Week activities include a minimum of three hours of appropriate in-depth instruction in each K-12 social studies class on the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence.
