SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Agreements for Technical Services for Project Collaborative Leaders Achieving Science Success (CLASS) Grant - $35,815 (Curriculum and Instructional Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval of Agreements for Technical Services with Jeanne Dyer, retired Sickles science department chair, to serve as Project Manager; and Michael Lindow, District Resource Teacher, to serve as Project CLASS Web Design Consultant.

The Project CLASS grant, one of 10 awarded competitively within the state, is a partnership with the Department of Education (DOE) Center for Mathematics and Science Research at Florida State University, University of South Florida Anchin Center, The College Board, and the Museum of Science and Industry. The partnership will provide an innovative K-12 science program to Mort, Pizzo, and Witter Elementary Schools; Greco and Van Buren Middle Schools; and Hillsborough, King, and Middleton High Schools providing enrichment instructional activities, teacher professional development, summer science camps, and research opportunities for teachers and students.

Two major features of the partnerships are: 1) K-12 science workshops and College Board Vertical Teaming training designed to strengthen teacher networking in these feeder patterns, and 2) Anchin Center workshops on Cultural Competencies for all K-12 teachers in the grant as models for future district and state workshops.

The DOE requires the partnership districts to have a Project Manager and Web Design consultant.

The Project Manager will coordinate grant activities, communicate with Project CLASS partners, provide information to the Project CLASS Web Design Consultant, and maintain a database of teachers and administrators participating in the program to receive training as AP teachers.

The Web Design Consultant will develop the website linked to the DOE Office of Mathematics and Science Research to provide communication accessible to schools, teachers, students, and all stakeholders. Products and workshops constructed through the grant will be available for dissemination by the DOE.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 3 - Student performance on FCAT science will increase a minimum of five percentage points.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $35,815 (Jeanne Dyer - $30,000 and Michael Lindow - $5,815) are available in the Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant, Project 1406.

EVALUATION

August 31, 2008. The district Department of Assessment and Accountability Office will perform evaluations and submit a report to the Florida Center for Research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (FCR-STEM) based on performance measures as determined by the grant. The USF Coalition for Science Literacy also collects data from all the 10 state partnership grants for the FCR-STEM.
