We request the School Board adopt the attached National Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation to honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans.

The Hispanic-American community has a long and important history of commitment to our Nation’s core values. The numerous contributions of Hispanic Americans have helped shape our community and positively impacted our nation. Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated nationwide and begins on September 15, was created to recognize the many achievements of Hispanic Americans and their contributions to our country.

Suggested activities will be provided to school sites as well as specific lessons to all elementary and middle and high school Spanish classes. In addition, websites suggested for teachers and students will be made available to further enrich the world language classroom offerings. As a culmination of this celebration, all schools are encouraged to participate in the Hispanic Cultural Festival which will take place on November 3, 2007, at Leto High School. This is an all day event which will feature a variety of cultural experiences including dance, art, and food.

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we join with all Americans in celebrating this rich and diverse culture and encourage all citizens to recognize the important role of Hispanics in creating and building this great Nation.
