EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, the U.S. Congress established a new requirement that all school districts with a federally-funded school meals program develop and implement wellness policies that address nutrition and physical activity by the start of the 2006/2007 school year. The School District of Hillsborough County met this requirement. As with many non-funded federal mandates, the requirement was met, but it was difficult to fully implement. Consequently, in some cases, fragmentation of the plan has occurred.
The district Wellness Plan will allow the departments of Nutrition, Elementary Education, Physical Education, and Health Services to mention a few, combine their efforts to build the infrastructure to support the well-being of all students in the district. By developing a district Wellness Plan, all schools and the community, will avoid overlapping of activities, and eliminate unnecessary duplications of wellness efforts. See attached resume.
