SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Contract with Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance, Inc. to Renew the Pregnancy Prevention Program (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Prevention Specialists provide education and counseling to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at eight middle school sites (Buchanan, Dowdell, Franklin, Memorial, Pierce, Progress Village, Roland Park, and Van Buren). The Education Now and Babies Later (ENABL) Postponing Sexual Involvement curriculum is used. Ongoing counseling is provided to all middle school grades with parent permission. The following community partners provide the extended services to at-risk students, Hillsborough County Health Department, Ophelia Project, and the Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 – The District will eliminate the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

($180,000) – These funds are provided by the Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance, Inc. and are given directly to the District. These dollars will fund prevention specialists’ salaries.

EVALUATION

The University of Tampa provides data collection services for the program. Success is measured by the provision of ENABL/Postponing Sexual Involvement program services to projected number of students (this criteria has been met for ten consecutive years). In addition, participants in the counseling component are given a pre and post test of knowledge to indicate what they have learned as a result of the program. Students are tracked into and through high school to measure the long term effects of the counseling and the curriculum.
