2006/2007 Senior Scholarship Survey Report (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The attached 2006/2007 Senior Scholarship Survey Report provides data regarding scholarships offered to Hillsborough graduates. Through the Guidance Department at each senior high school, graduating seniors are asked to fill out a Senior Scholarship Survey. The surveys are administered to seniors as close to the end of the school year as possible in order to capture as much of the scholarship information as possible. The Department of Assessment and Accountability then compiles the collected data so that trends in the amount, type, and distribution of scholarship funds to our students can be reviewed. Examples of the types of scholarships our students are offered include academic, athletic, performing arts, and “others,” such as leadership or community service. Availability of scholarship dollars varies from year to year based upon the economic situation of the country and the occurrence of catastrophic events that can drain our nation’s resources. The scholarship numbers contained in this report are accurate only through the end of May 2007 and do not include the many scholarships that are awarded to students after graduation day. In addition, many students receive financial aid based upon need and those dollars are not reflected in this report due to confidentiality of the recipients.

In 2006/2007 Hillsborough graduates were offered first-year scholarships that exceeded $34.3 million, and out of those offered $22.3 million were accepted. The value of the accepted scholarships over the 4-year college span was $85 million, which is an increase of $2.6 million from the previous year. First-year scholarships accepted by Hispanic and Black students increased $303,034 and $169,623 respectively, over the previous year.
