SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Amendments to Charter District Contract

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This item was approved by the School Board on December 11, 2007. Since that date, the State Board met and has requested changes in the due dates for annual reports of progress.

Hillsborough County Public Schools is one of the founding charter districts in the state of Florida. On November 26, 2002, the State Board of Education approved a contract affording the district the opportunity to waive certain state statutes in an effort to provide educational services to children that are more effective, efficient and innovative. The original contract had an expiration date of June 30, 2008 and included a requirement that the district submit an annual report of progress to the State Board of Education.

Because Hillsborough is one of four counties participating in the charter school district pilot program (the others are Orange, Palm Beach and Volusia), its contract termination date was determined by the 2007 Florida Legislature to be July 1, 2010, F.S. 1003.62(7). At the request of the State Board and with the agreement of the district, the new due dates for the annual reports will be January 15, 2009 and 2010. Attachment 1 is an amendment to the contract reflecting these revisions. The charter district contract and the most recent annual report of progress are on file in the Office of Non-Traditional Programs.
