SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve to Submit to the Florida Department of Education the Additions to the 2008/2009 Florida Course Code Directory for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Middle School Courses for Sixth Through Eighth Grades (Middle School Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval to submit to the Florida Department of Education the requests to add the following middle school courses to the 2008/2009 Florida Course Code Directory:

  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) & Career Planning

The AVID electives require their own course numbers. Currently there are AVID course numbers for Grades 9-12, but there are no middle-level (Grades 6-8) course numbers to indicate that AVID is an academic, college preparatory course. We want colleges to recognize the AVID elective by name, not potentially view the courses as remedial.

At the present time, AVID schools are utilizing a variety of course numbers to identify the AVID elective. The number of AVID schools is growing, not only in our county, but across the state. By assigning a unique course identifier, we will be able to gather accurate data regarding student progress and establish consistency through a common set of AVID course numbers.

The deadline for submitting courses for state approval for the 2008/2009 Florida Course Code Directory is March 1, 2008. Once the courses are approved by the state, they will be made available to all districts in Florida.

Middle school students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds who are underserved are the targeted population for AVID. The proposed courses will promote academic achievement as well as facilitate support for students in M/J Advanced and high school credit courses.

Staff Development will be provided on the course goals and objectives and adoption of the courses into Silk Scheduler to all stakeholders—AVID site coordinators, AVID elective teachers, and site administrators. This will take place as a part of the monthly AVID District Coordinator’s meetings and the Principal and Assistant Principal Council meetings.

  • ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

    FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

The addition of these courses will generate FTE funding based on student enrollment.

    EVALUATION

If the additional AVID courses are approved by the DOE, progress of students enrolled in these courses will be tracked to ensure an increase in Honors and Advanced Placement course enrollments as a result of participation in the AVID program.
