Evaluation of C.E. Mendez Foundation Drug Education Program, 2006/2007 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Contracts with the C.E. Mendez Foundation were approved by the School Board on February 13, 2007, (agenda items E 5.12 through E 5.16) to provide their drug, alcohol, and tobacco awareness and prevention education program to middle school, high school, and private school students for the 2006/2007 school year. The Summary of Objective Outcomes for the Too Good for Drugs Education program is attached and suggest the program was successful in meeting grant objectives.

According to the findings of the Mendez Foundation, “students in the evaluation sample experienced a 6% increase in goal setting and decision making skills; 4% increase in social and resistance skills; 7% increase in emotional competency skills; 2% increase in attitudes towards non-drug use; and a 10% increase in the perceptions of the harmful effects of drug use. Students also experienced decreases in their intentions to use or try tobacco (62%), alcohol (45%), and marijuana (24%).”

Goal 1 - The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds $804,600 for this program were provided through the Safe and Drug Free School Grant (Total funding for 2006/2007 was $1,029,409).
