Approve Renewal Implementation Agreement with the Center for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program, Sixth Year - $411,090 (Elementary, Middle and Secondary Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval of the renewal implementation agreement for the 2008/2009 school year to continue the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program operation.

On May 20, 2004, the School Board approved the initial agreement with the AVID Center for Plant City High School and Marshall and Tomlin Middle Schools. The implementation agreement outlines member roles, materials, training, and fees associated with the AVID Center. The AVID program supports students who potentially will be the first-generation to attend college. A summary of the program is attached.

High Schools: Alonso, Armwood, Blake*, Brandon, Chamberlain, Durant, East Bay*, Hillsborough, Jefferson, King*, Lennard*, Leto*, Middleton*, Plant City*, Riverview, Robinson, Spoto, and Wharton

This AVID Implementation Agreement has been reviewed and approved by the School Board Attorney, Tom Gonzalez.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 –The district will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $411,090 which include the annual membership fee of ($140,400), AVID curriculum libraries ($231,390), and District Professional Service Fee ($39,300) are available through the following sources:

EXCELerator funds from additional weighted FTE generated from Advanced Placement exams ($339,519), Smaller Learning Communities Grant funds ($48,840), Magnet Grant funds ($19,611), and GEARUP Grant funds ($3,120).

EVALUATION

An evaluation of the program will be completed by June 30, 2009. The AVID Center will provide customized, comparative data reports as well as a full hierarchy of reports comparing overall state data to individualized site reports.
