SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Adoption of Recommended Titles as State-Adopted Instructional Materials for K-5 READING Education (Elementary Education)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We request approval to adopt the recommended state-adopted instructional materials for the K-5 Reading Program. The attached memorandum from Glenda Brown, Supervisor, Elementary Reading/Language Arts, indicates the textbook committee studied and recommended the instructional materials according to District guidelines (Policy 4.16) which include:
- The District textbook selection committee is trained and reviews sample materials submitted.
- The State Committee evaluates submissions using the Florida Department of Education instructional materials evaluation packet.
- The State Committee rank orders all submissions evaluated.
- The State Committee recommends two choices per subject for teacher use by using the same evaluation form provided by the state and also used in the state’s textbook adoption process. In the event that two choices are not available, teachers will use the one submission being recommended by district committee.
- An official ballot is prepared and distributed to all teachers using sample sets of instructional materials selected for possible adoption.
- Teachers vote for their top choice and send sealed ballots in pre-labeled envelope to the Supervisor of Instructional Materials.
ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)
Goal 1 - The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of five percentage points.
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)
These items may be purchased using categorical textbook funds included in the general operating budget for Curriculum and Instruction. The estimated cost of the primary textbooks for K-5 Reading for 2008/2009 is $5,629,923.
