SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Contract with What We Could Be, Inc. To Provide Summer Program Activities and Training for Students and Parents in the East Tampa Community, as Well as Vocational Training for Students at Falkenburg Academy and the Leslie Peters Halfway House (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In March of this year, the Florida Department of Education allocated additional Title I dollars to Hillsborough County Public Schools for the purpose of impacting student populations at risk of dropping out of school. These dollars are required to be expended by the conclusion of this year’s fiscal budget period. What We Could Be, Inc. will implement a summer program that will deliver a series of comprehensive and multi-faceted parent, teacher, and student training curriculums to assist in closing the achievement gap for the children and youth in the East Tampa community. What We Could Be, Inc. will also facilitate a Community Pride Day Celebration, Anti-Gang Summit, and a Back To School Rally for participating parents, teachers, and students. In addition, this contract will support vocational skills training for incarcerated and transitional students at Falkenburg Academy and the Leslie Peters Halfway House.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 - The District will eliminate the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

This contract will be paid using Title I funds in the amount of $34,260.

EVALUATION

At the conclusion of the Summer Program, weekly progress reports will be analyzed to determine if the goals of the summer program were accomplished. Dr. Maxine Woodside will meet weekly throughout the summer program with the vendor to discuss progress. These progress reports will also be used in determining future contracts.
